Discord is on the verge of becoming even more of a home staple in the coming years, with Sony investing in the app – now holding a minority stake in the ever-popular company.
Discord is now utilized by more than 140 million gamers each month, most of which are PC gamers and mobile device users. However, that will change in the coming years, with Sony planning integration of the VOIP into its PlayStation network by 2022.
Sony & Discord Bringing People Together
The plan for Sony seems to revolve around the idea of bringing new friendships and communities together, as stated by Sony president and Chief executive Jim Ryan in a blog post:
“We’re constantly looking for new ways to enable players around the world to connect with one another, form new friendships and communities, and share fun experiences and lasting memories,”
“Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year, allowing friends, groups, and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily while playing games together.”
The announcement came to surface just two weeks after Discord reportedly rejected a $12bn offer from Microsoft to buy the company – with Sony quick to announce the initial workings of the integration at present.
Sources are claiming that the social communication platform turned down the handsome offer as they were already focused on a potential public listing in the future. Sony’s investment also comes as part of a $100m funding round Discord are trying to secure.
Many experts fear that Microsoft have dropped the ball by losing out on the Discord deal, with Sony being their main rivals in the console gaming sector.
One expert (Matthew Gribben) states that “Microsoft, Sony’s only real rival in the console space, has potentially massively dropped the ball by letting Discord get away and now be tightly integrated into the Playstation ecosystem,”.
Both Sony and Microsoft released their next-gen console range at the back end of last year. However, due to the current shortage in, well, everything, both have been out of stock for some time now.
What Is Discord?
Discord is the world’s most popular VOIP service on the internet, combining the best features of TeamSpeak, Skype, and Slack into one, easy-to-use application. The application was launched in 2015 as a free service that would allow gamers to chat over video, audio calls, and text messaging.
It rose to popularity thanks to team-oriented games like CS:GO, PUBG, Fortnite, and Amongst Us – allowing teammates to easily communicate with one another.
After the death of IRC – a popular messaging platform that gamers used to use -Discord became the go-to for individuals that wanted to find like-minded gamers.
The Discord app is already available on Xbox One , Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X – also downloadable on PC and smartphone.
Another Milestone For Sony
The new partnership would suggest the promotion of cross-play – a form of gaming where individuals using different devices can play the same game. Regardless of speculation, the overall goal is to improve the overall experience for the players.
The implementation of Discord into PlayStation will likely boost Sony’s reputation amongst social gamers, with the console giants historically showing unwillingness to accommodate cross-play game types.
All being said, were not far away from PlayStation gamers being able to openly communicate via the Discord application.
